Passport Wait Times Set to Increase in 2023 as Demand Surges and Staffing Shortages Continue
As the world slowly emerges from the global pandemic, travel restrictions are easing, and more people are eager to explore new destinations. However, with this uptick in travel demand comes a new challenge for many travelers – extended passport wait times.
The COVID-19 pandemic not only disrupted travel plans but also led to the closure of many passport agencies and processing centers. This has created a backlog of applications that is expected to take months, if not years, to clear. Additionally, many passport agencies are still operating with reduced staff and limited capacity, further exacerbating the problem.
According to the U.S. Department of State, the current wait time for a standard passport application is approximately 18 weeks, up from the pre-pandemic average of 6-8 weeks. This delay has caused frustration and anxiety for many travelers who have upcoming trips planned.

In addition to the increase in demand, staffing shortages at passport agencies are also contributing to the delays. Many passport agencies were forced to furlough or lay off staff during the pandemic, and some have been slow to rehire or train new employees. This has created a bottleneck in processing applications and has made it difficult for agencies to keep up with the growing demand.
To address the issue, some governments are taking steps to streamline the passport application process and reduce wait times. In the United States, for example, the Department of State has introduced expedited processing options for travelers with urgent travel plans. These expedited services come at an additional cost but can help travelers receive their passports in as little as 2-3 weeks.

“As the world reopens and travel demand continues to grow, we expect passport wait times to remain elevated for the foreseeable future,” said Williams. “Travelers should plan ahead and allow plenty of time for their passport applications to be processed to avoid any last-minute delays.”
In the meantime, travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the latest developments in passport processing and to check the status of their applications regularly. With a bit of patience and careful planning, it is still possible to obtain a passport in time for that dream vacation – even in the midst of a global pandemic.
