Uganda Introduces New E-Passport to Enhance Security and Efficiency
KAMPALA, UGANDA – In a bid to enhance security and efficiency, Uganda has officially launched its new e-passport, replacing the traditional paper-based passport system. The new e-passport, featuring a biometric chip, will provide secure authentication of the traveler’s identity and help combat passport fraud and identity theft.
The launch of the e-passport comes as part of the government’s efforts to modernize and streamline its immigration and border control processes. The e-passport will store the holder’s personal information, including their photograph, fingerprint, and other biometric data, making it harder for counterfeiters to create fake passports.
“The introduction of the e-passport represents a major milestone in our efforts to enhance the security and efficiency of our immigration and border control systems,” said Minister of Internal Affairs General Jeje Odongo. “The new e-passport will provide greater security against identity theft and passport fraud, while also facilitating smoother and faster travel for Ugandan citizens.”
The new e-passport, which features a modern design with various security features to prevent forgery, will be available to all Ugandan citizens, including those living abroad. The passport will be issued by the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, with applicants required to submit their biometric data for inclusion in the e-passport’s chip.
Ugandan citizens applying for the e-passport will need to provide various documents, including proof of citizenship, a passport application form, and a passport fee. The e-passport fee will vary depending on the type of passport being applied for and the processing time required.
“The introduction of the e-passport will bring numerous benefits to Ugandan citizens, including enhanced security, improved efficiency, and increased convenience,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Sam Kutesa. “The e-passport will allow our citizens to travel more easily and securely, while also helping to combat illegal immigration and transnational crime.”
The launch of the e-passport has been welcomed by many Ugandan citizens, who see it as a positive step towards enhancing the country’s security and international reputation. The new e-passport is expected to improve Uganda’s ranking on the Henley Passport Index, which ranks countries based on the travel freedom their citizens enjoy.
“I believe that the introduction of the e-passport is a significant development that will benefit all Ugandan citizens,” said Sarah Namugere, a resident of Kampala. “The e-passport will make it easier for us to travel abroad, while also providing greater security and protection against identity theft and passport fraud.”
In addition to enhancing security and efficiency, the new e-passport is also expected to boost Uganda’s economy by making it easier for Ugandan citizens to travel and conduct business abroad. The e-passport will enable Ugandans to take advantage of various travel opportunities, including tourism, education, and trade.
“The launch of the e-passport is a positive step towards enhancing Uganda’s international competitiveness and promoting economic growth,” said Minister of Trade and Industry Amelia Kyambadde. “The e-passport will make it easier for Ugandan citizens to travel abroad for business purposes, while also attracting foreign investors and tourists to our country.”
The introduction of the e-passport is part of Uganda’s broader efforts to modernize and digitize its government services. The government has already introduced various e-government initiatives, including online passport applications, e-visas, and electronic birth and death registrations.
