The Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) is urging all Department of Defense (DoD) personnel to ensure their passports are up to date and in compliance with new travel restrictions. With the global pandemic still ongoing, travel restrictions have been changing frequently, and it is important for military personnel to have their passports ready for any possible deployments or travel.
The DTMO, a component of the Defense Human Resources Activity, is responsible for managing the DoD’s official travel program, which includes issues related to passports and visas. In a recent memo sent out to all military personnel, the DTMO emphasized the importance of having a valid passport for official travel.
“Due to the ever-changing nature of travel restrictions and requirements, it is crucial for all DoD personnel to have a valid passport at all times,” the memo read. “Failure to have a valid passport could result in delays or restrictions on travel, which could impact mission readiness and operational effectiveness.”
According to the memo, all DoD personnel are required to have a valid tourist passport for personal travel and an official or no-fee passport for official travel. The DTMO has also recommended that military personnel sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important updates and alerts while traveling abroad.
In addition to renewing passports in a timely manner, the DTMO is also reminding military personnel to be aware of any entry requirements or travel restrictions for the countries they are visiting. With the pandemic still ongoing, many countries have implemented strict entry requirements, such as mandatory quarantine periods or proof of vaccination.
“It is crucial for all military personnel to stay informed of any travel restrictions or requirements for the countries they are traveling to,” the memo stated. “Failure to comply with these requirements could result in denial of entry or other consequences.”
To assist military personnel in keeping their passports up to date, the DTMO has provided resources and information on its website, defensetravel.dod.mil/passport. The website includes information on how to apply for a new passport, renew an existing passport, and obtain a no-fee passport for official travel.
“We encourage all military personnel to visit our website and familiarize themselves with the passport requirements for official travel,” the memo concluded. “Having a valid passport is essential for ensuring smooth and efficient travel for all DoD personnel.”
In response to the memo from the DTMO, many military personnel have already taken steps to update their passports and ensure they are in compliance with travel restrictions. Airman First Class Sarah Wilson, who is stationed at a military base in Europe, recently renewed her passport to ensure she is ready for any possible deployments.
“I want to be prepared for any travel opportunities that may come up,” Airman Wilson said. “Having a valid passport is essential for military personnel, especially with the constantly changing travel restrictions due to the pandemic.”
Another service member, Sergeant John Thompson, shared similar sentiments about the importance of having a valid passport for official travel.
“As a member of the military, I know how important it is to be ready for any mission or deployment,” Sergeant Thompson said. “Having a valid passport is a key part of that readiness, and I’m glad the DTMO is emphasizing the importance of keeping our passports up to date.”
As the global pandemic continues to impact travel worldwide, the DTMO and other military agencies are prioritizing the readiness and preparedness of military personnel. By ensuring that all DoD personnel have valid passports and are aware of any travel restrictions, the military can maintain its operational effectiveness and mission readiness in an ever-changing environment.
