Hawaii State Library Launches Passport Program to Encourage Reading and Exploration
In an effort to promote literacy and cultural awareness, the Hawaii State Library has launched a new program that is sure to excite book lovers and travel enthusiasts alike. The Hawaii State Library Passport Program allows library cardholders to “travel” the world through the pages of books by checking out and reading books from a curated list of international authors and settings.
“As a library, we are always looking for ways to engage our community and promote reading,” said library director, Sarah Johnson. “With the Hawaii State Library Passport Program, we hope to inspire readers to explore different cultures and perspectives through literature. It’s a fun and educational way to travel the world without leaving the comfort of your own home.”
The program works like this: library cardholders can sign up for a passport at their local branch and receive a stamp for every book they read from the curated list. The list includes books from a wide range of countries and genres, allowing readers to experience different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. The goal is to collect stamps from a variety of countries and complete the passport by reading books from all around the world.
“We wanted to create a program that would not only encourage reading but also spark curiosity and a sense of adventure in our community,” said Johnson. “By reading books from different countries, readers can gain insights into the lives and experiences of people from around the world.”
In addition to collecting stamps in their passports, participants in the program can also attend virtual events and discussions about the books they have read. The library will host book clubs, author talks, and cultural workshops to provide a deeper understanding of the literature and the countries it represents.
“We believe that reading is a gateway to understanding and empathy,” said Johnson. “By reading books from different cultures, we can expand our worldview and learn to appreciate the diversity that exists in the world.”
The Hawaii State Library Passport Program has already generated a lot of buzz among book lovers in the community. Many are excited about the opportunity to explore new literary landscapes and connect with fellow readers who share their love of books.
“I think it’s a brilliant idea,” said Melissa, a library patron who signed up for the program. “I love reading, and I love to travel, so this program is perfect for me. It’s a great way to learn about new cultures and expand my knowledge through literature.”
The Hawaii State Library hopes that the Passport Program will not only encourage reading but also foster a sense of community among library patrons. By bringing readers together to discuss and celebrate books from around the world, the program aims to create connections and promote cultural understanding.
“We live in a diverse and multicultural world, and it’s important to embrace and celebrate that diversity,” said Johnson. “Through the Hawaii State Library Passport Program, we hope to encourage our community to explore new perspectives, engage in meaningful conversations, and cultivate a greater appreciation for the richness of our global society.”
The Hawaii State Library Passport Program is open to library cardholders of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or just starting your reading journey, the program offers something for everyone. So pack your bags, grab your passport, and embark on a literary journey that will take you around the world from the comfort of your local library. Happy reading and happy travels!
