Michigan Launches Recreational Passport Program to Encourage Outdoor Exploration
Michigan residents and visitors now have a new way to explore the state’s natural beauty with the launch of the Michigan Rec Passport program. The program aims to encourage outdoor recreation and boost tourism by offering a convenient and affordable way to access state parks, trails, and other recreational facilities.
The Michigan Rec Passport is a single, annual pass that provides entry into all Michigan state parks and recreation areas, as well as access to state boat launches and more than 100 state forest campgrounds. The passport also includes a subscription to the Michigan Rec Finder app, which helps users navigate and discover new recreational opportunities across the state.
“We are thrilled to launch the Michigan Rec Passport program and offer residents and visitors a convenient way to access Michigan’s incredible outdoor resources,” said Lisa Wozniak, director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “This passport not only provides access to our state parks and trails but also supports the maintenance and preservation of these important natural areas.”
The Michigan Rec Passport program comes at a time when outdoor recreation is more important than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in nature, and many people are looking for safe and socially distanced ways to stay active and connected to the outdoors.
“With the launch of the Michigan Rec Passport program, we hope to make it easier for people to experience all that Michigan has to offer,” said Wozniak. “Whether you enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, or boating, there is something for everyone to explore and enjoy in our state parks and recreational areas.”
The Michigan Rec Passport is available for purchase online or at select state park locations and costs $35 for Michigan residents and $70 for non-residents. The passport is valid for one year from the date of purchase and can be renewed annually. Funds generated from passport sales will be used to support conservation efforts, facility improvements, and recreational programming across the state.
“We are excited to see the positive impact that the Michigan Rec Passport program will have on our state parks and recreational areas,” said Wozniak. “By investing in these important natural resources, we can ensure that future generations have the opportunity to experience and enjoy Michigan’s outdoor treasures.”
In addition to providing access to state parks and trails, the Michigan Rec Passport program will offer special discounts and promotions at participating businesses and attractions throughout the state. Passport holders can take advantage of exclusive deals on outdoor gear, camping supplies, guided tours, and more, making it easier and more affordable to explore Michigan’s outdoor offerings.
“We are committed to making the Michigan Rec Passport program a valuable and rewarding experience for our residents and visitors,” said Wozniak. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to connect with nature, support our state parks, and create lasting memories in Michigan’s great outdoors.”
As Michigan continues to promote outdoor recreation and environmental conservation, the launch of the Michigan Rec Passport program represents a significant step forward in achieving these goals. By providing a convenient and affordable way to access state parks and recreational areas, the program aims to inspire more people to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of Michigan while supporting the preservation and protection of these important resources.
