As of January 2022, the state of California has launched a groundbreaking program called EBT Passport Free, aimed at providing free access to state parks and recreational areas for individuals receiving benefits through the state’s Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program. This initiative is part of a larger effort to ensure that all Californians, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor recreational activities that the state has to offer.
The EBT Passport Free program allows individuals and families receiving benefits through the CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal programs to access state parks and recreational areas for free. This includes admission fees, parking fees, and other recreational fees that may be required for entry. By eliminating these financial barriers, the program aims to make it easier for low-income individuals and families to visit and enjoy the state’s parks and recreational areas.
“Our state parks and recreational areas are treasures that belong to all Californians,” said Governor Gavin Newsom in a press release announcing the program. “The EBT Passport Free program is a step towards ensuring that all Californians, regardless of their income level, have the opportunity to experience and enjoy these natural wonders.”
In order to participate in the EBT Passport Free program, individuals and families must present a valid EBT card along with a valid form of photo identification at the entrance to a participating state park or recreational area. Once verified, they will be granted free access for themselves and their immediate family members. The program is available at more than 100 state parks and recreational areas across California, including popular destinations such as Yosemite National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Redwood National and State Parks.
The EBT Passport Free program is an expansion of the existing EBT Discount Program, which offers discounted access to state parks and recreational areas for individuals and families receiving benefits through the EBT program. The new program builds on the success of the discount program by eliminating all fees for EBT cardholders, making it even easier for them to enjoy outdoor recreational activities and explore the natural beauty of California.
The launch of the EBT Passport Free program has been met with enthusiasm and support from advocates for low-income individuals and families, as well as environmental and conservation groups. These organizations see the program as a step towards addressing inequities in access to parks and recreational areas, and promoting environmental stewardship among all Californians.
