Fees for Emergency Passport Services to Increase Amid Growing Demand
In response to the increasing demand for emergency passport services, the United States Department of State announced that fees for expedited passport processing will be increasing starting July 1st. The decision comes as travel restrictions ease and more Americans are looking to travel abroad after a year of limited travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The current fee for expedited passport processing is $60, but starting next month, travelers who require urgent passport services will have to pay $75 for expedited processing, in addition to the standard passport application fee. The State Department justified the fee increase by citing the need to provide additional resources to accommodate the surge in demand for expedited passport services.
“With the easing of travel restrictions and the pent-up demand for travel, we have seen a significant increase in the number of Americans seeking expedited passport services,” said a spokesperson for the Department of State. “In order to meet this demand and ensure timely issuance of passports, we have made the decision to increase the fee for expedited processing.”
The expedited passport processing service is typically used by travelers who require a passport within a few weeks for international travel or other urgent reasons. Under normal circumstances, the expedited processing service guarantees a passport within 4-6 weeks, compared to the standard processing time of 10-12 weeks.
While the fee increase may come as a disappointment to travelers who rely on expedited passport services, the State Department emphasized that it is necessary to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the passport issuance process. The department has also taken steps to increase staffing and resources to accommodate the surge in demand for expedited passport services.
