NEW YORK CITY – For residents of New York City looking to travel abroad, getting a passport just got a whole lot easier. The city recently announced a new program aimed at streamlining the passport application process and making it more convenient for New Yorkers to obtain this essential travel document.
The program, aptly named “Get a Passport NYC,” was unveiled by Mayor Bill de Blasio in a press conference held at City Hall. The initiative is a collaboration between the Department of State and the New York City Department of Records and Information Services, with the goal of making the passport application process more accessible and efficient for city residents.
“Traveling abroad is an essential part of modern life, whether for business or pleasure,” Mayor de Blasio said. “We want to make sure that all New Yorkers have easy access to the necessary documents to make their travel dreams a reality.”
Under the new program, New Yorkers can now apply for a passport at any of the five borough offices of the Department of Records and Information Services. These offices will serve as designated passport acceptance facilities, where residents can submit their application materials and have their documents reviewed by trained staff.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer this service to our residents,” said Commissioner of the Department of Records and Information Services, Pauline Toole. “By expanding our services to include passport applications, we are making it easier for New Yorkers to obtain this important travel document without having to make a trip to a separate facility.”
In addition to the borough offices, the program will also offer mobile passport application units that will travel to various locations throughout the city. Residents will be able to visit these units and submit their passport applications without having to travel far from their homes or workplaces.
“We understand that New Yorkers lead busy lives, and we want to make the passport application process as convenient as possible for them,” Toole said. “By bringing the application process directly to the people, we hope to reach a wider audience and help more residents obtain their passports in a timely manner.”
The program also aims to educate New Yorkers about the importance of having a passport and the steps involved in obtaining one. Informational sessions will be held at various community centers and public libraries throughout the city, where residents can learn about the application process, document requirements, and deadlines.

In addition to the educational component, the program will also offer expedited processing services for residents who need their passports in a hurry. For an additional fee, applicants can request expedited processing and receive their passport within two to three weeks, rather than the standard six to eight weeks.
“We understand that emergencies can arise, and sometimes residents need their passports on short notice,” Toole said. “By offering expedited processing services, we hope to accommodate those who require their passports quickly and ensure that they can travel without any delays.”
