US Passport Office Warns of Delays in Processing Times for Original US Passports

The US Passport Office has issued a warning to travelers planning to apply for original US passports, citing longer-than-usual processing times due to increased demand and ongoing operational challenges.

In a statement released on Monday, the Passport Office acknowledged that many Americans have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to travel internationally once again after over a year of restricted movement due to the global pandemic. As a result, they have seen a surge in passport applications in recent months, leading to a backlog in processing times.

“We understand that many Americans are excited to resume their travel plans and are eager to obtain their passports as soon as possible,” said a spokesperson for the Passport Office. “Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications we have received, we are currently experiencing delays in processing times for original US passports.”

The Passport Office explained that the delays are due to a combination of factors, including staffing shortages, social distancing protocols, and increased safety measures to protect both employees and applicants from COVID-19. As a result, the average processing time for a new passport application has increased from the standard 6-8 weeks to up to 12 weeks or more in some cases.

For travelers with urgent travel plans, the Passport Office is offering expedited processing services for an additional fee. However, even expedited applications may take longer than usual to process due to the current backlog.

“We understand that these delays may be frustrating for travelers, especially those who have time-sensitive travel plans,” said the spokesperson. “We are working tirelessly to process applications as quickly as possible while ensuring the safety of our staff and applicants.”

In the meantime, the Passport Office is urging travelers to plan ahead and apply for their passports well in advance of their intended travel dates to avoid any last-minute complications or delays. They also recommend checking the status of their application online to stay updated on any changes or developments.

Despite the challenges posed by the current backlog, the Passport Office remains committed to providing American citizens with secure, reliable, and efficient passport services. They have reassured travelers that they are doing everything in their power to expedite the processing of applications and minimize any disruptions to travel plans.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of all those who are waiting for their passports to be processed,” said the spokesperson. “Rest assured, we are working diligently to clear the backlog and return to our standard processing times as soon as possible.”
