Passport Hawaii State Library

The Hawaii State Library has announced a new initiative aimed at providing library cardholders with a unique opportunity to travel the world without leaving the comfort of their own homes. In collaboration with the State Department of Transportation, the library is rolling out a new program called “Passport Hawaii State Library,” which will allow patrons to check out a passport book that can be used to “travel” to different countries through the library’s extensive collection of books, films, and other resources.

“We are thrilled to launch Passport Hawaii State Library, a program that will not only promote cultural awareness and understanding but will also encourage reading and exploration,” said Linda Elia, the State Librarian. “With this program, our patrons can embark on virtual journeys to countries around the world through the vast resources available at our library.”

The concept of Passport Hawaii State Library is simple yet innovative. Library cardholders can visit their local branch and check out a “passport book,” which will contain information about a particular country, including its history, culture, landmarks, and customs. The passport book will also include a list of suggested readings, films, and other materials available at the library that focus on that country.

“We want patrons to have a truly immersive experience when ‘traveling’ to a new country through Passport Hawaii State Library,” said Elia. “By providing them with a curated selection of resources, we hope to spark their curiosity and encourage them to dive deep into the culture and traditions of each destination.”

To make the experience even more interactive, the library will also host special events and programs related to the featured countries. From film screenings and author talks to language classes and cooking demonstrations, patrons will have the opportunity to engage with the culture of each country in a meaningful way.

“We believe that Passport Hawaii State Library has the potential to not only educate and inspire our patrons but also to foster a sense of unity and understanding in our community,” said Elia. “Through this program, we hope to celebrate the diversity of our world and showcase the beauty of different cultures and traditions.”

The first country to be featured in Passport Hawaii State Library is Japan, known for its rich history, vibrant art and literature, and delicious cuisine. Patrons can check out a passport book dedicated to Japan and explore the library’s collection of books on Japanese history, literature, and culture. They can also watch classic Japanese films, attend a sushi-making class, or participate in a traditional tea ceremony.

“We are excited to kick off Passport Hawaii State Library with Japan, a country that holds a special place in the hearts of many people in Hawaii,” said Elia. “We hope that this program will allow our patrons to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture and inspire them to explore other countries in the future.”

As Passport Hawaii State Library gains popularity, the library plans to expand the program to include more countries and regions from around the world. Patrons can look forward to “traveling” to countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and beyond, as they embark on a global journey of discovery and learning.

“We are committed to providing our patrons with unique and enriching experiences that go beyond traditional library services,” said Elia. “Passport Hawaii State Library is just the beginning of our efforts to create a dynamic and engaging library environment that promotes lifelong learning and personal growth.”

With Passport Hawaii State Library, the Hawaii State Library is redefining the concept of travel, inviting patrons to explore the world through the power of books, films, and cultural programs. Whether they are interested in ancient civilizations, modern art, or exotic cuisines, patrons can embark on a journey of discovery and adventure from the comfort of their local library. It’s time to pack your bags, grab your passport book, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime with Passport Hawaii State Library.
