Uganda Introduces E-Passports to Enhance Security and Efficiency
In a bid to enhance security measures and streamline the passport application process, the government of Uganda has introduced e-passports for its citizens. The new electronic passports, which are embedded with a secure chip containing biometric information, are set to replace the traditional machine-readable passports currently in use.
The introduction of e-passports comes as part of Uganda’s efforts to align with international standards for travel documents and enhance border security. The new passports will feature advanced security features, including encryption technology and facial recognition capabilities, making them more resistant to fraud and counterfeiting.
“The introduction of e-passports in Uganda is a significant step towards enhancing the security of our travel documents and ensuring the integrity of our borders,” said Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. Jeje Odongo. “With the new e-passports, we will be able to better protect our citizens’ identities and combat passport fraud.”
In addition to improved security measures, the new e-passports are also expected to simplify the passport application process for Ugandan citizens. The electronic system will enable applicants to submit their biometric data online and track the status of their application, reducing the time and effort required to obtain a passport.
“With the introduction of e-passports, we are aiming to make the passport application process more efficient and convenient for our citizens,” said Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology, Judith Nabakooba. “The new electronic system will enable applicants to apply for their passports from the comfort of their homes and track the progress of their application online.”
Ugandan citizens will be required to apply for the new e-passports through an online portal, where they will need to provide their biometric data, such as fingerprints and a digital photo. The new e-passports will be issued with a validity period of 10 years, and the cost of obtaining one will remain the same as the traditional passports.
The government has also announced plans to set up dedicated passport processing centers across the country to facilitate the issuance of e-passports to citizens. The centers will be equipped with the latest technology for capturing biometric data and printing the new electronic passports.
“We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition to e-passports for our citizens and providing them with the necessary support and resources to obtain their travel documents,” said Minister Odongo. “We understand the importance of having a valid passport for international travel, and we are working tirelessly to make the application process as seamless as possible.”
The introduction of e-passports in Uganda has been welcomed by many citizens, who see it as a positive step towards enhancing security and efficiency in the issuance of travel documents. The new electronic passports are expected to improve border controls, reduce long queues at passport offices, and enhance the overall travel experience for Ugandan citizens.

With the introduction of e-passports, Uganda joins a growing list of countries in Africa and around the world that have adopted electronic travel documents to enhance security and streamline the passport application process. The new e-passports are expected to be rolled out to Ugandan citizens in the coming months, and the government is working to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
