Michigan State Parks see record numbers of visitors thanks to Recreation Passport
Michigan State Parks have always been a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, but this year has seen record numbers of visitors thanks to the state’s Recreation Passport program. The program allows Michigan residents to access all 103 state parks and recreation areas for just $12 per vehicle per year, making it more affordable than ever for families to explore the beauty of the Great Lakes State.
Since the Recreation Passport program was launched in 2010, the number of visitors to Michigan State Parks has steadily increased. However, this year has seen an unprecedented surge in visitors, as families seek safe and accessible outdoor recreational opportunities during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’ve seen a significant increase in visitors to our state parks this year, especially on weekends and holidays,” said Ron Olson, chief of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division. “The Recreation Passport program has made it easier than ever for Michigan residents to enjoy our state parks and we’re thrilled to see so many families taking advantage of this opportunity.”
One of the most popular state parks in Michigan is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, located along the shores of Lake Michigan in the northern part of the state. The park offers miles of hiking trails, stunning sand dunes, and scenic overlooks of the lake, making it a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
“We’ve seen a noticeable increase in visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes this year, especially during the summer months,” said Sarah Reynolds, park ranger at Sleeping Bear Dunes. “The Recreation Passport program has definitely played a role in attracting more visitors to the park, as families look for affordable and accessible outdoor recreation options close to home.”
In addition to Sleeping Bear Dunes, other popular state parks in Michigan include Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Each of these parks offers unique outdoor experiences, from waterfalls and rivers to rugged cliffs and pristine beaches.
“We’re fortunate to have such a diverse array of state parks in Michigan, each offering something different for visitors to enjoy,” said Olson. “Whether you’re looking for a peaceful hike through the woods or an adrenaline-pumping climb up a sand dune, there’s truly something for everyone in our state parks.”
In addition to providing affordable access to Michigan State Parks, the Recreation Passport program also helps fund important conservation and preservation efforts across the state. A portion of the revenue generated by the program goes towards maintaining and improving park facilities, as well as supporting wildlife habitats and natural resources.
“Our state parks are a valuable resource for Michigan residents and visitors alike, and it’s important that we continue to invest in their preservation and protection,” said Olson. “The Recreation Passport program not only provides a source of funding for these efforts, but also helps raise awareness about the importance of our state parks in preserving Michigan’s natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.”
As Michigan State Parks continue to see record numbers of visitors, park officials are reminding visitors to practice responsible outdoor recreation, including following Leave No Trace principles, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife and natural resources.
“We want everyone to enjoy their time in our state parks, but we also want to ensure that these special places are protected for future generations,” said Reynolds. “By being mindful of our impact on the environment and following best practices for outdoor recreation, we can all do our part to preserve Michigan’s natural beauty for years to come.”
Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a first-time visitor, Michigan State Parks offer endless opportunities for adventure and exploration. With the Recreation Passport program making access more affordable than ever, there’s never been a better time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors in the Great Lakes State.
